Crystalbrook Byron: Why every mum needs a solo-cation

Re-enactment taking some pretty liberal creative licence with how sophisticated this frazzled mum actually looked.

I have long been a fan of the vision behind the Crystalbrook Collection, having eyed off the Albion for years. So when I stumbled across the luxurious Crystalbrook Byron, resort-style with a heated infinity pool and tropical rainforest setting, it was like targeted Instagram advertising was sending me a divine sign.

Yoga at 7am. I haven’t been to yoga in years.
Tennis court. I love the idea of tennis, and I love-hate actually playing tennis.
Boardwalks through rainforest to Tallows Beach.
Bikes you can ride into town.
Reading nooks coming out of the wazoo.
A big bathtub to soak away your worries.
Rooms in the treetops.

I was on the edge of sold.

The only thing stopping me from going was a big fat dose of Mum guilt. I knew if I took my toddler Lark, I could say goodbye to reading and relaxing. I knew if I took my fiancé RaRa, he’d get very grumpy very quickly whenever I tried to read my book, due to some sort of perceived unfair toddler distribution duties, and I’d just end up on edge the whole time, waiting for the next grump.

But…

I’m pregnant. First trimester. Insanely tired.
I’ve been flogging my guts out trying to get the business up and running.
Living with the in-laws, whom I adore, is very different to living in your own place, with your own things at your own pace.
Throw in a shitty fucking wet winter in Sydney.
2 hours a day in the car doing the daycare round trip and commute into the city.

I really feel like my mental health needs this mini break.

But…

The Google Reviews were incredibly mixed. Many people raved about the experience, but an alarming number complained about the worn state of the rooms and the mould. I knew I’d be seething with resentment if I dropped a bunch of cash on a luxurious resort stay only to find the room was mouldy and tatty.

So I did what a boomer would do: I picked up the phone to make an actual call. Spoke to a very helpful lass, who answered all my warm-up questions like whether I could get tennis lessons, how bike hire works, what’s the easiest way to get to and from the hotel (Don’t pay the airport taxi tax, get an Uber or many guests choose Byron Easy Bus, while they officially recommend Byron limos), and then finally…
I’m pregnant, looking for a solo break and in desperate need of a beautiful room. Some guests have mentioned mould in the Google reviews.

Honestly, she handled it superbly.

It’s unavoidable in a rainforest, but be sure to include that you have a mould sensitivity in the comments section when booking, and we’ll organise a deep clean of your room.

The phone call was incredibly helpful and reassuring, and I decided to stop hovering over the booking button and actually press the darn thing.

Fast forward two weeks.

Sure enough, here I am in room E30, and it’s stunning. I’m so happy I do that thing I do every time I stay somewhere nice and imagine recreating it as my future home one day.

A day in the life at Crystalbrook Byron

As for how I’m restoring my mental health, the secret is hiding in a ‘day in the life’ of a stressed-out mum and entrepreneur in need of a solo-cation.

7am complimentary yoga (although there appears to be some politics about whether it’s in a warm, comfortable room or outside in the freezing cold).

8am a video call with Lark and RaRa.

Mama: You are my heart.

Lark: You are my heart too, Mama. Can you please pick me up?
(I put the phone on the ground and lean over it, like I would when picking her up from the cot and giving the phone a big hug).

Lark: Can I come to your house?
Mama: We’ll come here together soon; would you like a tour for now?

8:20am breakfast in the sun at the Forest Restaurant, choosing avocado on toast with beetroot and coconut feta. Thinking about luxurious things like gut microbiome rather than negotiating breakfast with a toddler. Reading the new book I bought from The Book Room in good old downtown Byron Bay, called Billie King by debut author Shannon Kelly-White. Released 1 July 2026, the pages are practically still warm from the printing press.

10am trying to decide if I’m brave enough to swim in the middle of winter.

10:02am after dipping my toe, deciding I’m more of a boardwalk-through-the-forest kinda girlie today.

Reading in the sun by the lake. Writing a reflection piece by Tallows Beach.

11:45am returning to the hotel, checking out the gym and then the day spa, trying to convince myself I want a facial when I really want a massage BUT commonly the hotel doesn’t massage pregnant ladies in their first trimester. Trying on serum samples, and watching my tired, dull mum skin radiate like a dewy teenager. I decided to invest in some beauty products for a DIY facial while relaxing in the bath.

12pm insatiable pregnancy cravings hit. The menu was full of yummy options, but what I really wanted was a big bowl of watermelon, strawberries and yoghurt.

Then appealing to the good-natured restaurant staff who were amazingly accommodating to this pregnant lady’s wild food desires. Decorated with fresh mint leaves.

1pm sitting by the pool, more reading in the sun, making it past halfway in under 24 hours. Chomping on some mixed olives. Listening to a crow that sounded a lot like a dinosaur, as it clicked and cawed, eyeing off the olives.

3pm time for a relaxing bath and in-room pamper session. Filling the bath and popping in a giant bath salt tea bag, while again getting sucked into the world of a lady bushranger and a troubled child set in rural Australia in 1918 and 1930. Fanny, frigging and freckle now permanently etched into my psyche. Topping up the hot water with my right foot, trying not to get the pages wet.

Counting down the hours until I can video call Lark again, oh how I miss her so so so so much.

Changed into my onsenwear RaRa brought back from Japan. That reminds me, I need to bring home some excellent gifts.

Still counting down the hours.

While simultaneously feeling oh-so-relaxed. I can’t remember the last time I had all these activities at my fingertips, and all I had to do was listen to my heart to figure out what wanted to do next. And could complete a full sentence in my head without feeling pulled in a thousand directions.

6pm a gorgeous hotpot dinner in the Forest restaurant. Beef cheeks filled my cheeks with glee.

I’ll probably fall asleep with the light on because RaRa isn’t there to switch it off, but you know, I wouldn’t want to be too comfortable; otherwise, I may never come home.

Is Crystalbrook Byron worth it?

Yes, one thousand per cent. It delivered everything I hoped for and more. I'd recommend it to solo travellers, mums needing a break, babymoons, couples, and I saw a couple with a baby under a year. The vibe is quiet, refined luxury.

By the time the airport transfer collected me, I was a glowing, relaxed puddle of a human eager to get home to my little family. I'd read 4 books, fed my gut microbiome at least 21 different plant foods, and spent 5 hours soaking in the bath. And had already promised RaRa and Lark I'd bring them with me next time.
