Five places I’ve injected IVF hormones on the go

Because your life, career, or date night shouldn’t have to stop just because you’re doing IVF – especially when you travel a lot.

IVF doesn’t care if you’re mid-meeting interstate, halfway through date night, or wedged in seat 27B of a delayed flight. When the hormones say jump, you stab: at the same time, every day.

Yes, you’ll need to keep the meds at the correct temperatures (mostly cold), but that’s only half the battle. The other half? Finding somewhere to stabby-stabby yourself in the belly.

In order of least to most… “novel”:

5. Hotel Room

Pretty vanilla in the grand scheme of things. Private and comfortable, with a side of room service on speed dial.
When travelling and staying overnight, pack the right amount of meds (including spares because mishaps happen). Time flights to land and check in around 3 pm, rescue those pens and vials out of the cooler bag and get them into the fridge immediately – especially when carrying the trigger shot.

4. Parents’ Room at an Airport (twice)

Technically, you’re trying to become a parent while injecting IVF hormones – ironic, right?
But these rooms are cleaner and calmer than the toilets, with places to sit your medications. Mix at the bottle station, draw the curtain and sit in the comfy chair. In and out faster than you can accidentally slip a nipple. Perfect if you’re flying in and out the same day without staying at a hotel. Nursing mums come first, of course.

3. In the car outside a Comedy Club at night

Because a strict needle schedule shouldn’t kill date night.
Icy cold cooler bag in the boot, one eye on the time, slip out before being roasted by a comedian only to be stabbed in the gut by a syringe under the glow of the dome light. Back inside faster than the bar line.

2. Toilet cubicle on a plane

My most reluctant – but necessary – venue.
Plane delayed, no choice but to hope turbulence wouldn’t hit as I pinched my belly flab. I worded up the flight attendant before takeoff; she was lovely and accommodating (Bless her)

1. In the car outside a Tennis Club in broad daylight

After the comedy club, I thought this would be a breeze.
Except I didn’t bank on a sold-out event – and how often people like to “just grab something from the car.” As I held the syringe high, inspecting the clarity of the hormone solution, dress hiked up with an ice pack tucked into my g-banger exposing a midriff like a star constellation of needle marks… a well-dressed man in a suit returned to his car. If he saw me, he politely averted his gaze, but for a second I worried I’d be refused re-entry.

There you have it: five less-than-glamorous, occasionally ridiculous, but always memorable places I’ve injected IVF hormones on the go. Sometimes the real juggling act isn’t just work and life – it’s finding space for needles between comedy punchlines, meetings and airport gates. Proof that IVF doesn’t freeze your life (only your eggs and embryos). It just adds a syringe to the packing list.

Disclaimer: Remember to always check with a medical professional on how best to transport and safely administer all medications.
